A P08 dispute says the same charge was submitted more than once. The cardholder saw two or more charges that looked alike and asked American Express to look at them. This guide explains what the code means, why it happens, and how to answer it well.

What is Amex reason code P08?

Reason code P08 is Duplicate charge. It means the Card Member claims the same amount was billed more than once for one purchase.

Sometimes the claim is right. A system error can send the same payment through twice. Sometimes the claim is wrong. Two charges that look alike can be two real, separate purchases, or one charge plus a second charge for something else.

A disputed charge is first worked on with the Card Member before the merchant is contacted. If more information is needed, the merchant receives either an Inquiry or a Chargeback. If the Card Member gives enough information, the merchant's account may be debited upfront.

Common causes of a P08 dispute

A few patterns show up again and again.

A payment system can submit the same transaction twice by mistake. This is the claim at its most real, and it is the one you should fix fast.

A Card Member who forgets about recurring billing may believe a charge is a duplicate. A monthly subscription billed at the same amount each month can look like a repeat charge on a statement. The charges are valid, but the cardholder does not recognize the pattern. If the real problem is that the customer meant to cancel and could not, the dispute may belong under canceled recurring billing instead.

Two separate purchases of the same item can also look like one charge sent twice. A customer who buys the same product in two orders, or buys for two people, generates two charges that match.

Other codes cover claims that get mixed up with P08. A wrong amount on one of the charges points to P05, incorrect charge amount. A claim that the goods never came points to C08, goods or services not received. A claim that the bill was paid another way points to C14, paid by other means.

How to respond to a P08 chargeback

A merchant can send documents showing that each charge is valid. That is the heart of every good P08 reply.

Start by checking your own records. Pull every charge in question and look at the details. If you find a true duplicate, the right move is to refund or credit the extra charge and say so in your reply. Fighting a real duplicate wastes your time and can cost you the case.

If the charges are separate, your job is to show it. Point to the differences between them. Different dates, different order numbers, different items, or different delivery addresses all prove the charges are not copies of one another.

The best way to respond is online through your Merchant Account. If you are not sure what the notice in front of you is asking for, start with how to read a chargeback notice.

Documents needed to fight a P08 chargeback

A merchant's supporting documents should include a copy of the charge record or credit record. That is the base of the reply.

Add proof that separates the charges. Useful items include:

  • Order forms or receipts for each charge, showing different items or dates
  • Delivery records that show two separate shipments
  • A subscription agreement that shows the billing schedule
  • Any credits or refunds already issued

A good reply explains the documents, addresses the specific dispute reason and describes the steps taken to resolve it. Do not just attach papers. Say what each one shows and why it answers the duplicate claim.

What happens after you respond

If a merchant's reply settles the dispute on time, there is no Chargeback. The case ends there.

After a Chargeback, the merchant can send supporting documents that might reverse it. The Chargeback is undone if the reply addresses the dispute successfully and on time. If the merchant does not reply in time or with the requested documents, the Chargeback stands. The money stays gone.

So answer fast, and answer the exact claim. For the rounds that can follow a reply, see what happens after you answer a chargeback.
